Psychiatric Evaluation in Cambridge, MA

A thorough psychiatric evaluation is the foundation of good mental health care. Before any medication is discussed, our clinicians take the time to understand your history, your current symptoms and what you want to be different.

Psych Boston provides psychiatric evaluation for patients in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from our office in Lexington and through secure telehealth. Cambridge has a large population of students, researchers and professionals, and many patients here start with telehealth and add in-person visits as needed.

Psychiatric evaluation for Cambridge patients: who it helps

People from Cambridge come to us for psychiatric evaluation for many reasons, including:

  • Persistent low mood, irritability or loss of interest
  • Ongoing worry, panic attacks or avoidance
  • Trouble focusing, organizing or finishing tasks
  • Sleep changes, fatigue or appetite changes
  • Mood swings, unusually high energy or impulsivity
  • A second opinion on an existing diagnosis or medication
  • Concerns raised by a pediatrician, school or primary care provider

What to expect

  1. Before the visit: You complete intake forms covering symptoms, medical history, current medications and family history. Bring a list of past treatments and any prior records.
  2. The evaluation: A 60–90 minute visit covering your symptoms, history, daily functioning, substance use, safety and goals. For children and teens, a parent or guardian takes part.
  3. Diagnosis and plan: Your clinician explains their impressions in plain language and discusses options — which may include medication, therapy referrals, lifestyle steps or further testing.
  4. Follow-up: Most patients return within 2–6 weeks to review progress and adjust the plan.

Frequently asked questions about psychiatric evaluation in Cambridge

Can I get psychiatric evaluation by telehealth from Cambridge?

In many cases, yes. Cambridge residents can often complete visits by secure video from home or work in Massachusetts. Your clinician may recommend an in-office visit in Lexington when that would be more helpful.

How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?

An initial evaluation usually lasts 60 to 90 minutes. Follow-up visits are shorter, typically 20 to 30 minutes.

Will I get a prescription at my first visit?

Not necessarily. Medication is considered only when it is clinically appropriate and after you have discussed benefits, risks and alternatives with your clinician.

Do I need a referral?

Many patients self-refer. Some insurance plans require a referral, so please check with your plan or ask our office when you call.

Which Cambridge neighborhoods do you serve?

We see patients from all parts of Cambridge, including Harvard Square, Central Square, Kendall Square, Porter Square and North Cambridge, as well as surrounding Middlesex County communities.

Is this an emergency service?

No. If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or call 911, or go to the nearest emergency department.
